The aim of this award is to promote ideas and, at the same time, to support young talent in technical disciplines.

The Eirich Award is a contribution to the long-term success of companies in the refractories production and application industries.

Who is behind the Eirich Award?

Since the invention of the Eirich mixing principle over 80 years ago, the worldwide refractories industry has been a core market for Gustav Eirich Maschinenfabrik, the Hardheim-based engineering companay in Germany.

The ECREF European Centre for Refractories gem. GmbH aims to selectively support young academics and effectively publicize their knowledge with this contest of excellence.

Dissertations and/or individual research with a scientific content equal to that of a dissertation e. g. doctorates, pos-doc work.

The work should have been completed no longer than two years ago. Also the participation is only once allowed.

  • materials and components

Topics concerning the studies of materials subsumed under the term "high-temperature materials" of, in the future, under the term "modern refractories".

Evaluated will be:

  • Discussion of environmental aspects incl. consideration of lifecycles
  • Discussion of energy and other resources
  • Potential for significant impacts incl. lifetime
  • Design and modelling for practical applications
  • Processing aspects

  • personal data sheet, max. 1 page
  • Abstracts, max. 3 pages
  • additionally to include max. 2 figures
  • font size: 10, font type: Arial, 1.5 line spacing
  • DIN A 4, margins: 2.5 cm
  • curriculum vitae, max. 1 printed page
  • abstracts and CV must be written in English

  • in German or English possible (simultaneous translation)
  • approx. 10 minutes
  • copy of your powerpoint presentation for the translators


Due to UNITECR the next Gustav-Eirich-Award will take place in 2016.

3rd Price: € 1.000,-

Winners of the first three awards will present their paper as a invited lecture (10 minutes) at the award ceremony at the "International Colloquium on Refractories" in Aachen. The exact placement will be announced at the award ceremony.

The winners will get traveling costs and one hotel overnight stay reimbursed.

The winner of Gustav-Eirich-Award may take part at the Summer School of CASC for free. There will be no reimbursement of travelling costs and hotel costs. See here.
